The best Buffer alternatives in 2026

Buffer is cheap at three accounts and less cheap at twelve. The alternatives worth a look, sorted by the limit you hit, how each one prices, and the gap every scheduler shares.

Buffer is one of the cheapest ways to schedule social posts. Its free plan covers 3 channels, and its paid plans bill per channel: Essentials at $6 per channel a month, or $5 on annual billing, and Team at $12 per channel a month, or $10 on annual billing. So most people searching for a Buffer alternative are not running from a big bill. They are running into a limit.

The limit decides the replacement. This page names the four limits people hit, sorts the alternatives by which one they fix, and runs the per-channel math, because Buffer's pricing model is cheap at three accounts and less cheap at twelve.

Why do people look for Buffer alternatives?

Four reasons, roughly in the order people hit them.

The first three are scheduler problems, and another scheduler can fix them. The fourth is not. Know which one you have before you switch.

The Buffer alternatives, sorted by what you need

Prices are list prices reported for 2026, in US dollars, at the entry tier. Several of these vendors repriced during the year, and third-party pages disagree, so treat the numbers as a guide and confirm on each vendor's pricing page before you buy.

Meta Business Suite is the floor. It schedules posts and reels to a Facebook Page and a linked Instagram account at no cost. It does nothing for LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, or Pinterest.

Publer is the closest swap. It also prices per account and has a free plan for 3 accounts, though X is excluded from it. Its paid plans start lower than Buffer's per-channel rate, and every tenth account or member is free.

Metricool bills per brand, not per channel. A brand is a bundle of profiles, so one bakery with Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Google Business Profile counts once. It leans on analytics, which is the thing Buffer keeps lightest.

SocialPilot bundles a fixed number of accounts into each tier. It has no free plan, but the flat bill beats per-channel pricing once you pass about half a dozen accounts.

Later is built around a visual calendar and a preview of the Instagram grid. It counts a social set, one profile per network, as the billing unit.

Hootsuite is the move up, not down. It adds listening, a heavier inbox, and approvals, and charges per user for them. Our Hootsuite alternatives page covers it in depth.

Per channel, per brand, flat tier: what you actually pay

Run one small business through Buffer's model at two sizes. All figures are list prices.

Per-channel pricing is linear. Up to 10 channels, every account you add costs the same as the last. Past 10, Buffer's own pricing drops to $4 per channel a month for channels 11 to 25 on both paid plans, then lower again from channel 26. Per-brand and flat-tier pricing is lumpy: you pay for a bundle up front, then add accounts for little or nothing until you hit the next tier. A business with three accounts should stay per channel. A business or agency with a dozen should price a bundle.

Is Buffer still free?

Yes. Buffer still has a free plan in 2026. It covers 3 channels and 1 user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at any one time; publish one and the slot frees up. It includes Buffer's AI Assistant for drafting text. It does not include team members or a deep queue, which is why active brands outgrow it fast.

What is the cheapest Buffer alternative?

For Facebook and Instagram alone, Meta Business Suite, because it is free. For more networks, Publer and Metricool both have free plans and paid tiers that can come in under Buffer, depending on how many accounts you run. Cheapest is not the same as best value, though. The subscription is the small cost. The large one is making a post for every slot on the calendar, and every tool on that table leaves that to you.

The gap every scheduler shares

Buffer, Publer, Metricool, SocialPilot, Later, and Hootsuite all do the same core job. They take a finished post and publish it on time. They differ on price, networks, and reports. None of them shoots the product video, cuts the Reel, or writes the week's captions in your voice.

That is the real reason a lot of Buffer accounts go quiet. The tool works. The supply of posts dries up. Switching schedulers does not fix that; it moves the empty queue somewhere else. The other kind of tool makes the content and then posts it. For where that line falls, see AI social media manager vs. a scheduler, and for how the whole category sorts out, see social media management software.

How do you choose a Buffer alternative?

Answer four questions, in this order.

The takeaway

Buffer is already cheap, so leaving it is rarely about price at small scale. Leave for a bundle when your account count grows, for Metricool when you need analytics, or for Meta Business Suite when Facebook and Instagram are all you run. If the queue is empty, no scheduler helps. Pick the tool that makes the posts. Set it and step back.
